Scarlet Letter legislation
Proposed legislation in California would have a convicted DWI (Driving While Intoxicated) driver now have dark red license plates with DWI placed on it.
This is reminisate of the Scarlet Letter. What do you think about this proposed law?

What is the purpose of this law? Is it to humililiate? How would the red license plate affect other drivers?
If I had to vote on this my vote would be "NO". Take away the Drivers License , Ok that is something constructive that could be done.
Impound the car that someone is driving when arrested, and later convicted. After that person is convicted sell the car.
Washington State, at one time, was considering just such a law. I conflicted with other when I said ANY car being driven by someone who had their license suspened due to Drunk Driving.
I believe if you are drinking and driving and you get caught, then you should not be on the road after that. Take the tags and the car.
Tags of any color on your car will not do any thing.
My vote would be NO.
No I don't like that idea because its kinda humilating and these people need to be punished not humiliated. They need to take away there license or something just not humiliate them.

Maybe they should stamp their liscense or something but not their car. What if someone else drives their car? Then if they get pulled over they might be accused of something that they never did. This does seem like just another form of a scarlet letter. It is meant to create a sense of shame. this is not a good idea.

This is a very humiliating way to punish the people and I don't that it should be done that way. There is other punishment to handle the situation. Maybe they should have to wear a wrist band or have a stamp on their liscense.

I think that the scarlet purpose would be a good idea. The purpose would let everyone know that they had been in trouble with the law and would warn people to beware.
i think that that this is not a good idea it will just creat more trouble

Ok, everyone... why should we worry about "humiliating" a convicted DWI offender? I wonder if all the people killed, maimed or otherwise affected by a drunk driver would care if that driver was to be humiliated. I had a friend who lost both parents and 4 of her siblings on a beautiful sunny afternoon, because someone decided to get behind the wheel while drunk! Humiliation is strong deterent. I would rather see someone humiliated than hear they were guilty of vehicular homicide, because they killed someone because they didn't choose not to drive while drunk. OR because friends didn't want to humiliate them by asking for their keys.
